Concept art sketches for a sic-fi feature. Story was about a deep space ship that crashes on a planet, so in designing the ship, I played off the idea of how an oil rig drills into the ocean, and mimic'd both the front of the ship to look like a drill (since it's 'digging' into space) and then shaped the body to look like it's spinning as it flies.
We also made it so that it compacts and expands depending on where they are in space/how deep they are or not. The deeper they go the more it expands.
To incorporate a theme of darkness vs light that's important with the characters storylines, we made it so that the ship has a lighted core, and a darker exterior. That way when the ship is compacted you see no light, but when it expands, the light starts to burst through 'breaking up the darkness'.
The back end of the ship has rotators like an oil rig drill as well, so that when it lands it can hook into the planet for stabilization.
There's a few interior sketches too. Then the last photo is just a visual board for it, that helped inspire some of the idea.
